Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older people. The disease usually begins after age 65. Nearly half of adults over age 85 have the disease.
Although Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging, the risk of developing the illness increase with age. As our population ages, the disease impacts a greater number of adults each year.
Dementia is a general term used to describe a group of symptoms: loss of memory, judgment, language, complex motor skills and other intellectual functions, stemming from permanent damage to the brain. This damage can be the result of a stroke, head injury or trauma sustained use of alcohol, or other rare causes that can progress slowly over time.
